To represent the varied objectives for which they are commonly used, the test’s content and presentation may vary slightly between the two versions.

There are two options for candidates to take the IELTS exam: in-person (commonly known as the paper-based test) or online (known as the computer-delivered test). Both IELTS exam options are used to evaluate a candidate’s level of English language ability and are accepted by many institutions, employers, and immigration authorities worldwide.
A booklet comprising the test questions and an answer sheet to record the answers are given to the candidate before they take the paper-based test in person at an authorized testing facility. Candidates must physically visit the testing facility to take the exam, which is generally administered at a set date and time.
On the other hand, the computer-delivered test is taken online at an exam center. Candidates take the test’s Listening, Reading, and Writing portions on a computer in this version of the exam. Still, the Speaking portion is administered face-to-face with an experienced examiner.
